HILLIARD, Fla. -- Shock and sadness from a family who lost not one, but two members Wednesday. The Nassau County Sheriff's Office says Adel Hbaba shot his wife, Aline, then turned the gun on himself.
Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper said, "The girl's mother actually found them this morning."
Their bodies were found inside their Hilliard home on Pine Street. It's the same home where they were raising three children, ages 6, 11, and 14. Leeper says the children were at school at the time of the shooting. Neighbors say they never heard a thing.
The Sheriff's Office says the couple had been married for 19 years. Family members tell Action News Adel Hbaba was a Syrian immigrant who owned several local convenience stores. They say he was a respected businessman, devoted family man, and they don't understand what could have driven him to murder then suicide.
Family friend Tammy Makhlouf said, "My heart hurts for him, his family, his children."
Leeper says deputies had never been called to the home before, and that they weren't aware of any prior domestic abuse issues. He says the children are now being cared for by family members.
This is the first homicide of the year in Nassau County.
