CALLAHAN, Fla. -- This is the sign that sparked the attention of many in town. It reads: Chick-Fil-A coming soon. It was placed here in front of this former fast food building on US-1 in Callahan.
Today, no sign, just empty holes. "I was at the church yesterday and saw that Chick-Fil-A was coming to town and today I saw it wasn't. I'm just curios why not," says Callahan local Danny Conners. Corey Hunt has the answer. "Just an April fools joke. We got a good sense of humor. Just trying to have a good time," says Hunt.
Hunt says he and his nephew came up with the idea last summer. He says they designed the signs and even a Facebook page. Hunt and his nephew put up two signs Wednesday night in Callahan and Macclenny and by Thursday morning people were talking. "Very excited. They were thrilled it was crazy. The word was going around that we're getting it. Then the rumors started," says Westside Journal Owner Dawn West. "People got wise to us. They were calling for the hoax," says Hunt.
Hunt says, he'd like to see the prank put Callahan on the map. Maybe for the next Chick-Fil-A. "We've all got our fingers crossed that the powers to be at Chick-Fil-A have a sense of humor like us and just let it roll off. And possibly maybe they'll take it to heart and maybe well get a Chick-Fil-A for real."
