JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A local college student is in critical condition after being struck by a car on Kings Road on Sunday night.

Detective JC Hurst with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says the crash happened around 9 p.m. Three female Edward Waters College students were walking east bound on Kings Road, near Tyler Street, when they were startled by a dog.

Reacting in fear, one woman jumped into a lane of traffic and was hit by a car. She was transported to UF Health Jacksonville with life-threatening injuries.

Another woman was hurt by flying debris immediately from the crash. According to Det. Hurst, she took herself to the hospital to be treated. The third woman did not suffer any injuries.

Three people were in the vehicle at the time of the accident. It is unclear if the driver will be facing any charges.
