PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla.-- More than 20 police cruisers lined the border of Ponte Vedra and Jacksonville Beach after a man was found dead behind the Marsh Landing Target.

"It's a little disturbing," said Calvin Whitaker, who lives down the road from the scene. "It's not what you think of at the beach."

A place known for its safety has become the scene of a suspicious death. Investigators with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office say they suspect foul play, but they aren't actively looking for any suspects. At least three people left the scene Sunday night in handcuffs.

"We have several suspects in custody that we are working on to question at this point in time to determine exactly what has occured," said St. Johns County Sheriff's Office spokesperson, Catherine Payne.

The area is an active homeless camp that police are familiar with.  Neighbors say they have always felt safe walking area sidewalks.  For that reason, the news comes as a complete shock.

"I've been out here 30 years and it's just not what you expect out here," said Whitaker.

"You always don't want that happening in your backyard," said neighbor Ian Aguilar.

Investigators plan to continue their search for clues in the daylight early Monday morning.
