JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Nelson Cuba, president of the Fraternal Order of Police, has been fielding call after call, alerting him of the suicide of one of their own. "Heartbroken" is the only word he can use to describe how he feels, how they all feel.

"I'm still in a daze," said Cuba.

Cuba tells us Officer Edward "Kraz" Krawczyk had a battle with cancer and had beaten it. He recalls Officer Kraz as being positive and smiled his way through his bout with the disease. Nelson isn't sure if more bad news on his health drove the 20-year veteran to suicide, or if he fell into a depression from such a long, courageous fight.

For officers who struggle with depression, Nelson says the union has its own chaplin and intervention programs are available to officers and their families. He says the hope is counselors can reach those involved before a tragedy like this.
