JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Becky Schadowsky still has many questions, but she never doubted her husband's killer would be caught.
Police say Tom Schadowsky was gunned down by Kevin Israel Williams after an argument at a gas station on Dunn Avenue on Wednesday evening.
Williams was arrested Thursday night.
Police say Williams was getting gas, when Schadowsky erratically pulled in next to him. Williams confronted Schadowsky and the two briefly exchanged words. Witnesses say Williams then pulled his SUV to the side of the gas station and waited for Schadowsky to leave.
"Witnesses say that he [Williams] then pulled out of the parking lot and got right behind the victim," said Lt. Rob Schoonover, "and within five seconds they heard a gunshot."
Schadowsky died at the scene from a single shot to the chest.
Witnesses of the argument told police to look for an orange SUV with a Florida A&M license plate. On Thursday, a tip led them to Williams and his orange SUV bearing a license plate that was only hours old.
"Israel Williams went to the driver's license bureau that morning and had his license plates changed from the old Florida A&M style to a new kind."
Police say Williams may have seen the news, and tried to hide.
It's a move that doesn't surprise Schadowsky's widow Becky, who calls Williams a coward who made a ridiculous decision -- one her husband likely never predicted.
"I honestly believe he had no idea it was coming."
Schadowsky says her husband wasn't a fighter, and would have asked for help if needed. Now she is left wondering why and how something like this could happen.
"Never underestimate the insanity of anybody. Because you never know. You just never know."
Police say Williams admitted to everything up until the shooting, telling them he wasn't involved. He also told police he threw the old license plate in a Dumpster in Nassau County, but a search had no results. Police are also still looking for the weapon.
Services for Tom Schadowsky will be held at the Oxley-Heard Funeral Home in Fernandina Beach on Tuesday. The viewing is from 4-6 p.m. and the service immediately follows.
