JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, workers searching for a gas leak discovered human remains in a wooded area off of Huron Street and West 12th Street in Northwest Jacksonville Saturday afternoon.
"It's approximately 300 feet away from the railroad tracks into the wood line to the east of here," said Sgt. Jay Farhat, JSO Homicide Unit.
Police units were dispatched to the area around 2:30 p.m. after workers with Teco Gas made the discovery.
According to investigators, because of the condition of the remains they don't know who the person is.
"At this time all we have are just a few bones. We'll have to start digging, especially if they were there for quite some time, you could have leaves and pine needles that have fallen over," said Farhat.
The area will be taped off at least until Sunday afternoon so that crime scene technicians can gather all the evidence. According to Farhat, crews may need to excavate to see if any other bones have been buried.
JSO is treating the case as homicide until it can be ruled out.
