JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department is interviewing candidates for a position to oversee EMS billing, to improve collection rates. The department bills roughly $50 million per year in fees.

“There are our own resources that are expended in the process of delivering public safety from drug therapy to standard wear and tear on the apparatus and this is one of the ways we can ensure these costs are naturally recouped,” said Tom Francis, public information officer for JFRD.

Around the same time the position was posted, the department implemented an online payment option. According to numbers provided by the department, 89 people have taken advantage of the option, paying $16,283 in fees.

“It's no different than in retail, some people prefer cash, some people prefer credit and this now allows us to introduce this same component into our process,” Francis said.

JFRD is looking into expanding the online option to other services, like fire inspections and special events payments.
