JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office reports a man died from his injures overnight after being hit on his head with a baseball bat during a football party.
Sgt. Mike Paul with the JSO says Josh Heinz, 31, invited guests over to watch a football game at his home on the 11000 block of North Santa Fe Street when an altercation took place.
Heinz was originally transported to St. Vincent's Medical Center, but due to the serious nature of his injuries, he was transferred to UF Health Shands Jacksonville.
According to neighbor Heather Tucker, Heinz was known in the area for always lending a helping hand.
"He offered to help us with our lawn, walk the dogs, he always went for walks with us to give us company," said Tucker.
Another neighbor, Samantha Hechler, was really shaken up to hear the news of his death.
"Josh is a wonderful person, he's very trusting, he's been a good friend to everybody around here," said Hechler.
Just before 5 p.m. Sunday, our camera caught two unmarked police cars pulling up to a home right across the street Heinz's home. Police exited the vehicles and began questioning people in the home.
According to neighbor Claire Kenaston, Heinz often held cookouts and invited the whole neighborhood over.
"He liked hosting things, he liked making people happy," said Kenaston.
Many people in the area say Heinz will be remembered not just as good neighbor but as their friend.
"He was very caring, he was a great guy," said Kenaston.
