JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-- Neighbors say they could sense things weren't normal next door at the home Thomas Webster rented with his girlfriend Patricia Berner; and they were right.
"We knew something wasn't right," said next-door neighbor Sandy.
Police believe 57-year-old Webster used a kitchen knife to kill 54-year-old Berner. Then, covered in blood, police say Webster traveled down Old St. Augustine Road to the Kangaroo gas station and asked a clerk to call 911.
Sandy says Berner was quiet and friendly, but had a different story about Webster.
"She was a sweet person. He was, I don't know what he was," said Sandy. "Their relationship was a little different."
Sandy says Webster was often home alone, while Berner worked. She also says the couple was planning to move out of the neighborhood, and head down south to care for Berner's ill mother. Sandy was storing some of their things.
"She's got tons of furniture in here too and now we have to figure out what to do with it," she said.
As a peaceful neighborhood comes to grips with this tragedy, it is left with so many questions; how a relationship years in the making came to such a quick and violent end.
"I don't know what the answer is," Sandy said.
Police say that Webster may have been drinking alcohol at the time of the incident.
Webster has been booked into the Duval County jail on a charge of murder.
