MAYPORT, Fla. -- A new fitness center for sailors and their families is now open.
The Navy held a ribbon cutting ceremony to open the Mayport Fitness Center.
It didn't take long for people to rush in and take advantage of the new fitness equipment.
The 100,000 square foot facility has an 18,000 square feet strength training and cardio floor area, three group exercise rooms, a cycling studio, two basketball courts, two racquetball courts, a family fitness room, and a 50-meter indoor pool.
Leaders at Mayport say it took more than bricks and cement to build the gym. It took years of hard work and dedication.
The building is energy efficient and took more than 250,000 construction hours to build.
The ceremony was delayed for about 15 minutes due to a suspicious package scare.
Police found and cleared an unattended box found on base.
