JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that took place in Arlington Thursday evening.

Police say a man was driven to the University Diner on Merrill Road after he was shot. The man, who's identity has not been confirmed, was taken to Shands Jacksonville where he is in critical condition.

Police say he was a passenger in a van that has several bullet holes in the windshield.

The JSO is also searching for evidence near the intersection of Anvil Road and Searchwood Drive, which is about five blocks from the diner. Shell casings were found in the area, but police have not determined if they are part of the case.

The shooter also has not been identified by police, but they believe another vehicle was involved. Investigators say a white SUV with front-end damage was seen leaving the area just after the shooting.

"We're not sure where the front end damage came from," said Sgt. Michael Paul. "There may have been a crash in the area, and we are looking at that right now, but that white Navigator, or white SUV that's the size of a Navigator, was seen leaving right after the shooting, and we don't know if they're a witness or involved at this point."

Police have not determined how many times the victim was shot. The driver of the van is being questioned by police, and is not considered a suspect at this time.
