JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A prominent dentist collapsed and died after a meeting with fellow members of the city's pension task force.
Dr. Chester Aikens collapsed just moments after the meeting adjourned. Aikens had been engaged in the meeting, trying to work with city leaders to solve the city's billion-dollar pension liability gap.
After the meeting, he was seen smiling and shaking hands with Mayor Alvin Brown. He then proceeded to leave, but stopped near the entrance. Security guards noticed that he was having an issue, and called for help.
Brown and local firefighters were among those who rushed to his aid. Those firefighters tried to resuscitate Aikens before an ambulance arrived. He was later pronounced dead at Baptist Health.
Aikens previously served as president of the National Dental Association. He also served on the Jacksonville Aviation Authority board and was a past chairman.
According to his website, Aikens leaves behind a wife and two sons.
