JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A group of local high school students will attend the inauguration of President Barack Obama.
Forty-two students from Raines High School left Saturday night for Washington D.C. The students were selected based on academic performance and discipline. Many told Action News the trip will be something they will never forget.
"It's a once in a lifetime thing," said Raines senior Courtney Gray. "My nerves are jumping a little bit."
Raines principal Shateena Brown hopes the trip to our nation's capitol will inspire students to achieve their dreams.
"One day they could be a president. They could be lawyers. They could be doctors. This is the opportunity for them to plant that seed and see that seed come to realization," said Brown.
The school raised $13,000 in four weeks by gathering donations from area churches and local businesses.
The group will return on Tuesday. Students from Jackson High School are also traveling to DC for Monday's inauguration.
