ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- St. Augustine is mourning the death a local college student. Kyle Allen, 21, was found dead at a college frat house in South Carolina. The Laurens County coroner told Action News the cause of death was "acute intoxication." The coroner ruled the death accidental.
Kyle was a graduate of Pedro Menendez High School in St. Augustine. Principal Clay Carmichael said, "He will be known for his quiet strength, both on the athletic field and off the athletic field."
Carmichael called Kyle a good kid, from a good family. A 2008 graduate, Kyle was a linebacker for the Falcons football team.
Athletic Director Terry Sapp said he was a role model. "He will be missed," said Sapp. "Society will miss him. He had a lot to offer."
Kyle and Jon Carter were teammates on and off the football field, best friends since their freshman year at Pedro Menendez. Carter said, "He was the man. Me and him did so much together and he meant so much to me."
Jon said all Kyle wanted to do was play college football. He says Kyle worked hard, and was on the verge of becoming an impact player for Presbyterian College. "He was a stud on the field. Me and him were actually captains of the team together. But it should have been him because he was the best player on the team," said Carter.
Carter said his friend was always the life of the party, but not one to over-indulge. He says this is a tragic accident that's taken the life of a promising young athlete, a son, brother, and a best friend. "He makes me want to be the person he was," said Carter. "He makes me realize what's important and what to value. And I'll never forget that."
Action News obtained a statement from Bob Staton, the Chief of Staff of Presbyterian College. He said, “Our deepest sympathies and sincerest prayers are extended to Kyle Allen’s family, teammates, and many friends. Our campus community grieves this untimely and tragic loss as we remember Kyle and his many contributions to the PC family.”
Funeral arrangements are still being made.
