JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Westside store owner is cleaning up after a vehicle smashed through the front door in an apparent "smash and grab" burglary. He said thieves made off with cash, beer and some other items from the Apple Gate Food Store, which was closed at the time.
"I've been in this business more than 23 years, and this is the first happening like that," said Abdo Yagizi, owner of the store.
Yagizi said he received a call from the alarm company at 3:30 a.m. Monday, reporting some sort of incident. Yagizi said it appeared that the accused thieves left the car inside the store when they couldn't drive it out.
"He was stuck inside and the towing truck come pick it up and take it," Yagizi said.
The store opened up as normal despite the damage. Long-time customers were amazed at what happened.
"People need to go out here and get a job instead of trying to rob stores and stuff," said Cassandra Hall, who stopped by the store Monday. "It's sad."
