JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office arrested a man who barricaded himself inside a Westside home.
JSO said police got a call at 11:40 a.m. from a family member saying a man in his 40s was inside a home on Herlong Road and was threatening to harm his mother after a verbal argument.
Terrie Powell's two kids are sitting at home locked down while negotiators talk with the man.
"I want to get through the roadblock and get home, make sure they're OK," she said.
Police said the man barricaded himself inside after firing a shot at his mother. That woman got out unharmed.
"He became verbally combative with police as a shot was fired, not at police but inside the residence, so he retreated back in the residence," said Melissa Bujeda with JSO.
Powell isn't sure how far down her home is from the one police are now surrounding, But her two teenage kids are scared.
"They're calling us and we are staying in touch by phone and making sure they stay in the house," she said.
Police said an in-home day care and a small apartment complex have been evacuated. And now police are working to get the man to come out.
"He's considered armed and dangerous he's fired two shots and we are taking a very cautious, methodical approach, trying to make it safe for everyone," Bujeda said.
Shortly before 7 p.m., police said officers had the suspect in custody.
