ORLANDO, Fla. (WFTV) -- Human remains were found off Hastings Street and Laconia Road behind a vacant house in Pine Hills Tuesday afternoon.
The remains are thought to be those of a female, the Orange County Sheriff's Office said.
"What I'd seen is nothing but buzzards flying around," neighbor Kisney Raymond said.
Those vultures led Orange County detectives to uncover the remains of a body at a home on Laconia Road.
"A person was walking their dog, saw the vultures, kind of wandered back to look and see, saw a body and called us," Jane Watrel with the Orange County Sheriff's Office said.
Detectives believe the body had been there for days.
Eyewitness News spoke with a neighbor who lives directly behind where the body was found.
"Saturday night we were in the back yard and we were having the pool cleaned, we smelled something, well I smelled something at that time but I didn't pay it any attention," Joy Christopher said.
Christopher said the odor only became noticeable Tuesday when investigators got to the scene.
She said she never saw vultures, despite the body being feet from her back fence.
"We haven't seen anyone in the back yard and we're always in the back yard, so we don't know exactly when it happened," Christopher said.
Investigators aren't 100 percent sure of the gender of the person.
"They believe the body is that of a female, it's not definitive. They're basing it on clothing and items found around the body. The body has been here for several days; the home has been empty for at least six months," Watrel said.
"Very scary, I don't know how I'm going to sleep tonight," Christopher said.
