ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- A tow truck driver is out on bond after he was arrested on grand theft charges in Clay County.

The driver is accused of stealing thousands when he was sent to rescue cars during Superstorm Sandy.

Anthony Joseph Moffo, 21, is a tow truck driver for Moffo Towing Company.

According to the Clay County Sheriff's Office, Moffo toted big checks to the bank illegally.

"They were contracted from November 2012 to January 2013. During that time they towed several vehicles to body shops in the New York and New Jersey area," said Detective Bryan Curry.

Curry investigated the case. He said Moffo was offered a contract from a company called Copart to remove cars from the flooded areas during Superstorm Sandy last November.

According to the police report, Moffo's job was to take the cars to body shops and be paid based on commission.

"This was the first time where we've had this situation arise where you know they went to help fellow Americans during crisis," said Curry.

Deputies said Moffo deposited at least one check in Florida at a Wells Fargo bank for $12,500 and about three more were deposited in New York.

"When you work for a company that you were contracted for and come back home with a check that shouldn't have never been in Florida in the first place, it's kind of ironic," said Curry.

Curry said Copart representatives tell him about $50,000 may have been stolen by Moffo.

Curry said Moffo knew he had to return the money.

"It was in the contract, that once the contract ended they would have to give back all checks and documents to the company," said Curry.

Action News tried calling Moffo's Towing to speak to Moffo himself, but the company said it has no comment.

Police said Moffo bonded out on $5,000. He is due in court in January.
