JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - More homeowners are taking crime prevention into their own hands by using home security systems and surveillance cameras.
Driving down the streets of Oceanway, signs indicating security systems at homes, and cameras are everywhere.
"Our goal is to keep an eye on one another. We are Oceanway, we are family here," said Bob Dorough.
Dorough has lived in Oceanway for years. He said security cameras have captured and helped the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office make arrests in arsons, car thefts, car burglaries, home burglaries, sex offenders violating parole and public indecency.
"I can't tell you the number of crimes in Oceanway that we have solved because of security cameras," said Dorough.
The most recent: a murder. Earlier this month, Action News Jax showed you two videos from two different neighbors' cameras in Oceanway, showing suspects driving away from the scene of a murder where a man was killed after walking in on two men that broke into his home.
"We catch wind of what's going on and then we put the word out through either our Facebook page or a text alert system that we have, and we asked people to start chipping in and doing what they can to scan their cameras and find out do you have any evidence, do you have any visuals the police can use," says Dorough.
He said many share that information in one place, the Oceanway Neighborhood Watch Facebook Group he created two years ago.
Now, the group has more than 5,000 members.
Dorough said many also post about the types of systems and equipment they use and he has also compiled a list of technology he is familiar with.
"We have compiled a lot of information in our group that homeowners can use to try to find out what they can do and we are really heavy on the video cameras," said Dorough.
He hopes it will deter criminals from even thinking about coming to Oceanway.
"We might have video of you, we might have members talking about you, so if you have a crime you want to commit Oceanway is not the place for you," said Dorough.
