Giffords, Kelly launch gun control initiative
PHOENIX (AP) - Former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has one word about gun violence in America: "Enough."
She and her husband - retired astronaut Mark Kelly - spoke to ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer for an interview that will be aired at 6:30 p.m. EST Tuesday. It's the second anniversary of the Tucson shooting rampage that killed six and wounded Giffords and 12 others.
The two also wrote in an op-ed published Tuesday in USA Today that they are launching an initiative aimed at curbing gun violence in the wake of the mass killing at a Connecticut school.
Segments of their interview were shown on "Good Morning America.
Giffords and Kelly met Friday with the families of victims in last month's shooting in Connecticut.
Kelly says the meeting brought back a lot of memories. He says: "You hope that this kind of thing doesn't happen again. And you know what? It does happen again."
Curbing Gun Violence
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Obama administration is calling gun owners' groups, victims' organizations and video-game industry representatives to the White House to discuss potential policy proposals for curbing gun violence.
President Barack Obama has ordered an administration-wide task force to send him proposals by the end of January. The group, led by Vice President Joe Biden, was formed in response to the horrific massacre at a Connecticut elementary school.
A White House official says Biden will meet Wednesday with gun violence victims' groups and gun safety organizations. On Thursday, he meets with gun ownership groups and sportsmen advocates.
The official says Biden also will meet with entertainment and video-game industry representatives. The official was not authorized to discuss the meetings before they were publicly announced and spoke on condition of anonymity.
The President faces a challenge from National Rifle Association and its supporters.
A group of gun rights advocates in Washington is planning a gun appreciation day just two days before the President's second inaugeration.
