WALTON COUNTY, Ga. -- A 76-year-old man is in critical condition after police say a hit-and-run driver struck him as he walked home from a Bingo game.

William Scarborough, of Walton County, Ga., is fighting for his life at Atlanta Medical Center. His family tells WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News they are praying he will pull through.

"She wants her Papa home," Scarborough's wife, Brenda, said of her grandchild. "I can't get him home. My grandkids are praying. We're all praying."

Brenda Scarborough says he lost his license due to health issues, so he usually walks wherever he needs to go. His family says he's known for walking in the neighborhood. They're struggling to understand how someone could have hit and left the retired truck driver on the side of East Spring Street in Monroe, Ga. as he walked home from playing Bingo with friends.

"We can't understand why they kept going. They shouldn't have," said another relative, Lisa Bentley. "If they had any respect for themselves, they would've at least called 911."

The Georgia State Patrol and Walton County Sheriff's Office are investigating. They tell Channel 2 Action News, at this point, they're looking for a Ford SUV, possibly white, that's missing a passenger-side mirror.

With no car to get to her husband in Atlanta, Brenda Scarborough is getting regular updates on his condition from her children who are with him at the hospital, as the entire family prays, they say, for a miracle.

"We've got little 4-year-old grandchildren who want their grandpa home," Bentley said. "He's a good man and he doesn’t deserve to be like this."

Police are working vigorously to find the driver and ask anyone who might have seen something related to the hit-and-run or a suspicious white Ford SUV Friday night in Monroe to give them a call.
