WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A Boynton Beach man who allegedly keyed his ex-girlfriend’s car and called her around 200 times during one weekend last October faces charges of criminal mischief of more than $1,000 and harassing communication, authorities said.
Reed Allen Young was booked into the Palm Beach County jail Tuesday morning and released in the afternoon after he posted a $3,000 bond.
Young’s former girlfriend told Boca Raton Police on Oct. 2 that she found two key-like scratches alongside the driver’s side door of her 2011 BMW and a fist-sized dent on the left quarter panel. The woman told police she suspected Young, whom she had previously reported to police following a theft of her property, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Later that day, the ex-girlfriend was at a doctor’s office when she received a call from Young. With the doctor listening to the conversation, Young allegedly said: “How did you like the side of your car this morning? I bet it will cost you a pretty penny.”
The car was taken to an auto body shop where the damage was estimated at $1,599.12, the affidavit states.
On Oct. 7, the woman agreed to phone Young with police listening in. During the conversation, Young wouldn’t confirm or deny his involvement in damaging the car, according to the affidavit.
The woman told police Young’s harassment continued with calls to her, the woman’s daughter and her friends. During one October weekend, Young allegedly made 200 calls, some of which the ex-girlfriend saved.
While police were at the woman’s house listening to the messages, she received “at least” three calls from Young, the affidavit says. The woman answered the last call with Young requesting a meeting and asking for money because he hadn’t eaten in two days.
After being told by the woman not to call again, Young warned her that the situation would become “more costly” if his wishes weren’t met, police say. Young lists his profession as cab driver for Metro Taxi.
Court records show that Young, 54, has been arrested 10 times in Palm Beach County since 1997 for charges ranging from grand theft auto to possession of cocaine.
