ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- A man found guilty of murder after causing a deadly crash while fleeing police in Orange County will spend the rest of his life behind bars. In court the victim's grandmother told him she forgave him.

Gangapersad Ramroop, 23, was found guilty of first-degree murder Wednesday after he killed innocent father Robert Hunter in a crash near Powers and Colonial drives.

Ramroop admitted he tried to elude police on the morning of July 4 because he was carrying an illegal gun.

Police said Ramroop fired several shots out the window of his car, and while fleeing, ran a red light and slammed into an SUV, killing the driver, Hunter, 25, a father of six.

Following the verdict, a tearful Sarah Hunter-Harvey turned to the man who killed her grandson. She told Ramroop she forgave him.

"I love you, and God loves you too," Hunter-Harvey said to Ramroop in the courtroom.

Ramroop began to weep.

Ramroop did not receive the same compassion from the court. The judge sentenced the man to life in prison.

Before he was led away to prison Ramroop spoke in court.

"It was because of my actions that John Robert is dead right now, and I take full responsibility," Ramroop said.

Hunter-Harvey told Channel 9's Anthony DiLorenzo what the emotional interaction with Ramroop was like.

"He teared up," she said. "I was not only crying inside but the tears flowed."

A juror told dilorenzo that, based on the charges, it was a difficult verdict to render.

"We were in there for about four hours, back and forth, but it was the right thing to do," said juror Blake Murphy.

Hunter-Harvey said she is a former social worker and that Ramroop, a criminal since age 13, had slipped through the cracks over the years.
