SANFORD, Fla. -- A Sanford teen is being hailed a hero by his family Wednesday after he managed to hide his cousin and sister in a closet and call 911 while thieves broke into his home.
The whole ordeal took place while 15-year-old Diego Trujillo's parents were at work.
Trujillo was home with his 6-year-old sister and 13-year-old cousin Amy Luco.
"We heard a really loud knock," Trujillo said.
One of the girls said she saw someone looking in through her window.
That's when Trujillo grabbed his cousin and sister and ran to his room.
"I got my phone, locked the door. We went in the closet, called 911," Trujillo said.
The thieves shattered a sliding glass door to break in.
"The lady on the phone, she tried to keep me calm, I tried to keep them calm," Trujillo said.
"I thought we were going to die," Luco said.
Luco said she could hear the burglars talking and throwing things around.
One of the crooks was caught on scene. The other two fled and hid in the shrubs of a nearby field but couldn't hide from a sheriff's office helicopter.
"I saw two suspects running through the cow pasture behind my house, and that's when I jumped my fence and waved police down and I pointed in the direction they ran to," neighbor Gil Nieves said.
