Davis, CA (Sports Network) - UC Davis first-year football coach Ron Gould has named Bert Watts as his team's new defensive coordinator.

Watts spent this past season as a coaching assistant with the Denver Broncos. Prior to that, he spent two seasons at the University of Colorado as the Buffaloes' defensive technical intern.

He also coached two years of high school in Florida and was the defensive coordinator for the professional Raiffeisen Vikings in Austria in 2007.

Watts played at the University of California and earned the Bears' Joe Roth Award for courage, attitude and sportsmanship as a senior in 2002.

UC Davis finished with a 4-7 record, including 3-5 in the Big Sky Conference last season under Bob Biggs, who retired after 20 seasons as head coach.
