Skateboard community strong in Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A new skatepark is coming to town and it's just in time for a summer full of unexpected showers. The Block is set to open on June 21st for "Go Skateboarding Day" with a free look at the indoor setup. Local skater Mike Peterson owns the new park and is excited about a place to skate even when it rains outside, as will happen all the time here in Florida.
Talking with Peterson this week what really stuck out to me was the support this new park was getting from the community. Not only were fellow skaters donating supplies and time to help put things together but also supporting the project was home improvement store Lowe's as part of a community outreach program. Not being well versed on the history of skating here in Jacksonville I did some research and after learning about Kona and it's impact it's great to see another place for interested skaters to enjoy their sport in the River City.
The Block is located at 709 Talleyrand Ave. Suite 1, just a stone's throw away from Everbank Field. All the particulars aren't set in stone just yet but Peterson told me prices will be under ten bucks to skate all day with kids 18 and under required to wear a helmet. For more info on The Block check out their facebook page online.
