JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville Suns will host the 2013 Southern League All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 17 at Bragan Field, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
The All-Star festivities begin on Tuesday July 16 with the 2013 All-Star Game Gala at the Jacksonville Landing courtyard starting at 7:30 p.m. All fans are invited to this free event to come out and meet the 2013 Southern League All-Stars, get autographs, listen to live music and celebrate this great event while watching the 2013 Major League All-Star Game on the big screen in the Landing courtyard.
The next day’s events begin with the All-Star FanFest from 3:00-5:30 p.m. in the Palm Tree Pavilion area at Bragan Field. For just $20, fans will be have access to player autographs and meet the players, in addition to an All-Star Game T-Shirt, interactive games, a special movie presentation and much more.
The 2013 Southern League All-Star Home Run Derby follows the FanFest at 6:00 p.m., with the league’s top home run hitters putting on a power display. Competing in the derby from the South Division will be Jacksonville Suns outfielder Jake Marisnick, Montgomery Biscuits infielder Cameron Seitzer and Mobile BayBears infielder Nick Evans. For the North Division, Huntsville Stars outfielder Brock Kjeldgaard, Tennessee Smokies infielder Christian Villanueva and Birmingham Barons infielder Dan Black will participate.
After the derby, first pitch of the All-Star Game takes place at 7:05 p.m., with special performances from BirdZerk and the ZOOperstars during the game, while a special All-Star Fireworks Show will take place following the game. also following the contest, the Suns will be playing a special home run tribute on the new High Definition video board featuring some of the greatest longballs in the game’s history, along with several former Jacksonville Suns appearing in the video including Giancarlo Stanton, Kyle Jensen and Derek Dietrich, along with a special appearance from one of the game’s all-time legends.
The game features three of the top 100 prospects according to MLB.com, including Jacksonville Suns OF Jake Marisnick on the South squad, as well as Chattanooga Lookouts OF Joc Pederson and RHP Zach Lee. The trio, along with the other 47 Southern League All-Stars hope to join the 13 players from the 2012 Southern League All-Star Game that have gone on to play in the Major Leagues this season.
This marks the fifth time Jacksonville has hosted the Southern League All-Stars, including the second occasion at Bragan Field. In its inaugural year, the Baseball Grounds hosted the 2003 edition of the league’s mid-summer classic, with the East Division team topping the West Division 7-5. The River City also played host for the 1974, 1980 and 1988 Southern League All-Star contests.
