• FHP: Male pedestrian critically hurt in crash in Fleming Island

    A man was critically hurt after he was struck by a car Monday night in Fleming Island.

    The crash happened just before 7 p.m. on U.S. 17 near Hibernia Road.

    The Florida Highway Patrol said 56-year-old Joseph Thomas, of Fleming Island, was attempting to cross U.S. 17 when he was struck by a 2010 Dodge Charger being driven by 20-year-old Chrystiam Montesinos of Green Cove Springs.

    Thomas was taken to Orange Park Medical Center.

    The road was closed for two hours as troopers investigated the crash. Originally, the crash was reported to FHP as a fatality.
